Entity DNA

Frequently asked questions

How EntityDNA works, where its Companies House data comes from, and what each feature shows.

General

Where does EntityDNA get its data?

From the public Companies House register and the documents filed there, including officer appointments, persons with significant control, accounts and confirmation statements.

Which companies are covered?

Companies registered in England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

How do I find a company?

Search by company name or company number from the home page.

Is EntityDNA free?

You can run a small number of company searches for free. The Pro plan unlocks full shareholding history, financials, network graphs, director pages and exports. See the pricing page for details.

Company structure charts

What is a company structure chart?

A company structure chart, sometimes called an ownership chart, shows who owns a company, in what proportions, and who runs and controls it. Corporate shareholders show where a company sits in a wider group.

Where does the ownership data come from?

From documents filed at Companies House, mainly confirmation statements, incorporation documents and the register of persons with significant control.

Can I see how ownership changed over time?

Yes. EntityDNA compares filings and highlights new and removed shareholders and increased or decreased stakes.

Entity network graph

What is an entity network?

An entity network maps the relationships between companies and the people who run them, so you can see which businesses are connected through shared officers.

How is the network built?

From officer appointments on the Companies House register. Each officer of the starting company is linked to the other companies they are appointed to.

Can I see networks for a person instead of a company?

Yes. Director pages have their own network view centred on that person.

Can I show only current officers or active companies?

Yes. Filter directors and companies by all, active or former, and switch between top-down, left-right and radial layouts.

Connected people

Who counts as a connected person?

Anyone who holds or held an officer appointment at a company where the director you are looking at is or was also an officer.

Can I see only current co-directors?

Yes. Switch the Related People list or the network graph between all, current and past connections.

Can I find a director by name?

Yes. Search by name from the home page and pick the director from the results.

Why do some directors have several Companies House records?

Companies House creates a new officer record in some situations, for example when details are entered differently. EntityDNA groups records that belong to the same person.
